--Deng Guoqiang (Senior Cultural Relics Appraiser and Researcher at the Palace Museum, Beijing) praised Guo Liang’s calligraphy for its distinctive style, vibrant energy, bold and dynamic brushwork, free-flowing strokes, skillful yet unforced composition, and harmonious spacing. He noted that the work embodies the new trends of contemporary calligraphy, making Guo Liang a rare and exceptional calligrapher.
Jiang Guoliang, the renowned contemporary calligrapher and former honorary chairman of the China Calligraphers Association, is a hallmark of Guangdong’s calligraphy.
Ouyang Zhongshi (former advisor of the Chinese Calligraphers Association, renowned contemporary master of calligraphy) noted that the art of Feibai (flying white) was created by Wang Xizhi, the Sage of Calligraphy. To be precise, Wang Xizhi was the ultimate synthesizer, as his Feibai style was neither unprecedented nor unparalleled. Mr.Jiang Guoliang’s application of Feibai in his cursive script "dragon" achieves a level of spontaneity within established boundaries, where brushwork flows with divine inspiration. The majestic image of a dragon roaring through ink seas captivates viewers. The resonance between observer and creator’s thoughts embodies the charm of calligraphy, fully manifested in Mr.Jiang’s works. Additionally, his cursive script "tiger" demonstrates perfect harmony of form and spirit. The application of Feibai technique reveals his calligraphic mastery reaching consummate perfection. The second stroke’s slanting line and final vertical stroke’s mottled pattern resemble the speckled tail of a Chinese freehand painting tiger. Mr.Jiang’s "tiger" character features elongated, slightly curved structure, embodying the image of "a mighty tiger perched on pine peaks, roaring through myriad green mountains." The essence of characters reflects human spirit and artistic aesthetics. Possessing heroic passion and conveying divine charm through brushwork represents the lifelong pursuit of calligraphers. Mr.Jiang’s "dragon" and "tiger" masterpieces are considered treasures in contemporary calligraphy. His cursive script "Heart Sutra of Prajna Paramita" showcases profound clerical script mastery. The composition resembles evenly distributed pearls, with an ancient elegance achievable only through calm, focused mind. The characters combine square and round brushstrokes, featuring substantial strokes and powerful lines that exhibit Wei stele script techniques. Robust horizontal strokes conceal agility, while vertical strokes display ingenuity within simplicity, forming his unique calligraphic style. Mr.Jiang Guoliang’s calligraphic works masterfully blend classical traditions with innovative expressions. His brushwork radiates rugged vigor and distinctive lines, creating dynamic compositions that harmonize with natural flow (as exemplified by the attached images of Li Bai’s "Qinyuanchun: Changsha" and "Early Departure from Baidi City"). Particularly in cursive script, he achieves remarkable variations, allowing his brush to dance freely with the content, resulting in visually striking works that resonate through dynamic line rhythms. This unique style has established his signature artistic voice, captivating viewers with its fluidity and expressive power.
Zhang Yuan (Council Member of the China Calligraphers Association, renowned calligraphy critic) commended Mr.Jiang Guoliang’s calligraphy: "Calligraphy embodies both tradition and innovation. While tradition provides the foundation, innovation breathes life into it. When these two elements converge, one achieves greatness. Though many have attempted dragon calligraphy, Mr.Jiang stands out with his unique approach. His compositions demonstrate remarkable dynamism, and his brushwork flows with effortless mastery—truly a masterpiece of the highest caliber."
--Liu Youju (President of Guangdong Chinese Calligraphy Academy, renowned contemporary calligraphy critic) The Calligraphy Review Panel of the China Badaling New Great Wall Organizing Committee highly praised Mr.Jiang Guoliang’s calligraphy: It truly embodies the inheritance and development of modern artists’ engagement with China’s poetry and calligraphy culture. The calligraphy not only inherits the essence and charm of ancient culture but also possesses a personal style, vigorous and unrestrained, graceful and ethereal, completed in one breath! Particularly in the creation of the great man’s "Qinyuan Chun Changsha," the majestic spirit leaps off the paper, and viewing the work feels like stepping into a painting. The two characters "Fenghua" are fully displayed! --Excerpt from the Calligraphy Selection Notice of the China Badaling New Great Wall Organizing Committee I have seen many calligraphers ’works, and the development process of a calligrapher generally goes through three stages: copying models, understanding models, and breaking away from models. Many spend decades, even a lifetime, practicing calligraphy models, yet still remain under the shadow of a particular school or model, highlighting the difficulty of breaking away. However, Jiang Guoliang’s works all reflect his unique style. One can see the brush rhythm of historical masters in his works, yet they naturally form a new calligraphy style. I believe this represents a sublimation in the development of contemporary calligraphy.
The continuation of calligraphy requires artists like Jiang Guoliang and styles that embody the spirit of our times. His work not only adheres to tradition but also dares to innovate while expanding boundaries within aesthetic principles. We hope Jiang Guoliang will persist in his creative direction, producing more timeless masterpieces that serve as role models for calligraphy development and guide its future evolution.
—Ouyang Zhongshi (former advisor to the China Calligraphers Association, a renowned contemporary calligrapher)
